A wellness app redesign focused on creating adaptive and supportive fitness experiences that adjust to users’ real lives, energy levels, and routines.

problem

Most fitness and wellness apps rely on rigid routines, generic plans, and guilt driven motivation. They often fail to adapt to people’s changing schedules, stress levels, energy, or lifestyle, causing users to feel overwhelmed, discouraged, and eventually abandon their fitness goals altogether.

solution

We designed EXO, a mobile wellness app that adapts to users instead of forcing users to adapt to the app. Through personalized routines, daily check ins, adaptive workout suggestions, and a more supportive tone, the experience encourages consistency without pressure or guilt. The app adjusts recommendations based on the user’s mood, energy, available time, and daily circumstances, creating a more realistic and sustainable wellness journey.

As part of my UX/UI certification, I worked on this project alongside another designer for the Daily Health Conference (DHC), a health organization looking to modernize its digital experience and reconnect with younger audiences through innovation.

We started by researching why so many people abandon fitness apps after only a few weeks. Instead of jumping directly into design, we focused first on understanding user behavior and emotional patterns. Through surveys, user interviews, journey mapping, and competitor analysis, we discovered a recurring issue: most wellness apps were too rigid and emotionally disconnected from real life.

Users told us they often felt guilty opening fitness apps after missing workouts, especially during stressful periods or busy weeks. Existing platforms focused heavily on discipline and consistency, but failed to adapt to users’ changing energy levels, work schedules, stress, or motivation.

These insights helped us define the core challenge: how might we create a wellness experience that feels supportive, flexible, and personalized instead of judgmental?

To explore this, we created personas, journey maps, and early user flows centered around adaptability. We then designed low fidelity wireframes and tested concepts focused on daily check ins, personalized onboarding, and flexible routines. Feedback showed that users felt more encouraged and emotionally supported compared to traditional fitness apps.

This led us to the final solution: EXO, a wellness app designed to adapt to real life. Instead of punishing missed workouts, the app responds to the user’s current situation. If energy is low, it suggests lighter activities. If time is limited, it offers shorter sessions. The experience focuses less on perfection and more on building sustainable habits through encouragement and flexibility.

The final outcome was a high fidelity prototype of an adaptive wellness platform designed around empathy, personalization, and long term consistency rather than pressure driven fitness culture.
